Sustainability at Meyer-Holsen

Taking responsibility for the environment and the region

Sustainable management is the basis of our success. This enables us to tap into new opportunities, minimize risks and face up to social and entrepreneurial challenges. We use resources sparingly and efficiently and act responsibly towards our employees and society.

Firing clay roof tiles is energy-intensive. On the other hand, the product has a very long service life. The tile have a 40-year guarantee and last for several generations. Environmental protection and sustainability have always been important issues for us.

We produce with green electricity

We mainly purchase green electricity from European hydropower. At the Rahden plant, part of the electricity is produced and consumed by a photovoltaic system.

Sustainable by conviction

For years, we have not focused on individual measures or products when it comes to sustainability, but have strategically pursued the goal of producing all products sustainably in both plants!

Raw materials

Sound, of course.

We process our best clay for customers with the highest demands. Clay and loam are mined in regional clay pits to conserve resources.

The REACH regulation is complied with.

Energy

Optimization of process flows.

By modifying the firing technology and optimizing the processes, the amount of gas used per tonne tile has been reduced by more than 30% in recent years. Heat from heat recovery is used at various points in the plant.

Production in Germany

Locally rooted.

With two state-of-the-art roof tile plants in the Minden-Lübbecke district, we guarantee reliable delivery of high-quality roof tiles and secure jobs in the local region.

Vehicle fleet

We drive CO2-neutral.

Our company car and truck fleet are CO2-neutral thanks to the DKV Climate Card and tankpool24. We also support certified international climate protection projects. Our vehicle fleet already consists of several electric vehicles - our goal is to switch completely to electromobility.

Packaging

Cradle to cradle approach.

We act in line with the Cradle to Cradle (C2C) approach: Euro pallets with a deposit system, recyclable PE film, strict compliance with the REACH regulation, responsible disposal and recycling of transport packaging, upcycling of cardboard packaging and CO₂-neutral propane gas for manual packaging.

By-product

Burning fracture for sports field surfaces.

Our burnt crushed stone is ideal as a by-product for sports field surfaces. Our aim is to achieve an end-to-end circular economy in line with the Cradle to Cradle (C2C) approach. The crushed fuel can also be added during processing (C2C).

Waste water

No waste water from tile.

Our sustainable recycling concept: thanks to an innovative circulation system for the resulting production waste water, no waste water is produced from tile.

Employees and administration

We work sustainably.

We enable our employees to lease e-bikes. To reduce paper consumption, 95% of our customers receive order confirmations, invoices and advice notes by e-mail - this significantly reduces the amount of paper required. Our system for the electronic processing of incoming invoices further reduces the need for paper.

Environment

Operation in accordance with the BImSchG (Federal Immission Control Act).

Our systems are operated in accordance with the Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG). This means that emissions are regularly tested and monitored. We have been participating in emissions trading since 2012 and support flower strips in the region as well as certified environmental projects and extensive projects to reduce CO₂.

Advertising

No printed brochures.

In the interests of sustainability, we avoid printing brochures and send out our advertising material as a PDF version. The Meyer-Holsen website runs CO₂-neutral thanks to green electricity in the data center.

Productstile)

Ecological natural material made from local raw materials.

For tile, we only use ecological natural material from local raw materials. The very long durability and recycling (the reference service life of tile is 300 years) underline the sustainability of our products, which have been certified in accordance with the Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) since 2021.

Waste

Recycling/reuse of waste.

We ensure that waste is carefully separated and professionally disposed of by specialist companies. Waste such as PE film, paper and cardboard is 100% recyclable.

ISO 50001:2018 - Certified energy management

This certification confirms our commitment to energy-efficient and responsible production - for sustainable tile that will last for generations.

Brick diversity for a Berlin industrial monument - Meyer-Holsen at the Friedrichshagen waterworks

A project like this doesn't come along every day: we supplied tiles that had to meet the highest aesthetic and technical requirements for the refurbishment of the roofs of the historic pumping machine houses A and B of the Friedrichshagen waterworks in Berlin in line with the preservation order.

The monument preservation authorities set clear specifications: Tile shape, cut length and, above all, a natural color play of three different shades of red were to match the original covering as closely as possible.

We supplied the entire roof area of approx. 3,200 m²:

Why Meyer-Holsen?
👉 "The bricks came closest to the historical original - this was the only reason we were able to issue the tender with material specifications."
- Ina Paul, Site Manager, Berliner Wasserbetriebe

We are proud to contribute our expertise to the restoration of this unique building in keeping with its listed status.
